If a loss of connection occurs between two multiplexing ports, the links
are dropped on the corresponding GBIC modules on the multiplexers.
For instance, if there is a loss of connection on the WEST (OPT A)
multiplexing port of a local multiplexer, the links are dropped on the
GBIC modules installed in CH1 to CH4 on the local multiplexer and also
on the GBIC modules installed in CH5 to CH8 on the remote multiplexer,
as shown in the illustration below.
The value of this type of network monitoring and fault notification is that
some hubs and switches can be configured to take a specific action in
the event of the loss of connection on a port. In some cases, the unit can
be configured to seek a redundant path to the disconnected node and
send out a trap to a network management station, and so alert the
network administrator of the problem.
